St John the Baptist Church was built in the early 20th Century as New
Edlington grew following the openingof a coal mine. Time
has now taken its toll on the building and it is need of
substantial restoration and renovation. The bad weather in
the summer of 2007 which caused heavy flooding in some parts
of Doncaster even flooded our boiler, and it is currently
being assessed for repairs and possible replacement.
Current restoration details
-
Currently being rewired at a cost of £30,000 plus vat
-
It
took two years to save the £30,000 to pay for the
rewiring
Future
restoration plans
-
Replace the roof
-
Redecorate inside
-
Replace the damaged guttering
-
Eventually replace the small church kitchen
-
Eventually replace the cast iron widow frames
-
Improve access for all members of the community
Our fund raising for all this has to be put alongside raising funds for
the general running of the church, which this year, will
cost in the region of about £30,000.00 and as with all bills
will seemingly continue to rise and is no mean feat for a
congregation of people with relatively limited means.
But our congregation is not just sitting back expecting help but is
working hard to make the parish church a building to be
proud of at the worshipping heart of the community of
Edlington while serving in any way it can help with pastoral
support and community involvement.
